Visiting the Sansevero Chapel with children

In my experience bringing children here, what strikes them most is not the Veiled Christ but the anatomical machines in the Cavea: the skeletons with the reconstructed circulatory system have an immediate effect, sparking curiosity and a touch of awe. That said, that area is only reached via a narrow spiral staircase: if you have a pushchair, it won’t fit, and you’ll have to leave it outside or take turns holding it.

Before entering, it’s worth explaining the photo rule, as that’s the hardest part for a child to follow: nothing inside can be photographed, with any device. The detail is in are photos allowed, and accessibility for those with a pushchair is in accessibility.

For the little ones, the short duration of the visit is an advantage: twenty minutes in the nave is enough to keep them curious without tiring them out, which rarely happens in larger museums where children start to lose patience after the first half-hour.

With older children, between ten and thirteen, the story of the anatomical machines and their true history almost always becomes the most interesting part of the entire visit, even more so than the Veiled Christ. It’s still best to warn those with a particular sensitivity to the subject beforehand, so you can decide together whether to go down into the Cavea.
